'Wetsx̱ / River Otter Dish 2022
Birch, acrylic paint and tung oil(medium brown on nose, lips, ears and bowl rim)
11"L x 4"W x 3"HBy Veronica Waechter
Artist Statement:
This bowl was made with reference to old Gitxsan bowls which have crest figures or spiritual helpers represented. The otter is a being not regularly seen, however there are old tales of what might happen when you do see one. This bowl was made after witnessing an otter playing in the Skeena/Xsyen near 'White Bottom' in Ts'msyen territory. The otter had been swimming on its backside, continuously rounding an offshoot of the river, over and over. The mysterious and playful energy of these beings are a rare gift to observe.
This bowl is great as a gift or for holding small items within.
This piece of birch was found fallen(for neighbourhood electrical) in Ts'msyen territory, it was collected respectfully, thought of methodically, carved carefully with handmade and hand sharpened tools, slowly dried layer by layer, shapes formed, design prepared, 2D carved, knife finished, then painted and lightly oiled. Made with patient energy(began the work in winter of 2018).
